Urban Surfaces

Texture mediums are one of my BFF’s! When I started painting (in oils) one of the things I loved was the texture created by the paint when you work with thick paint and a palette knife. In acrylics I’ve used a variety of mediums to make the paint act more like oils paint in that way – and I’ve had success with a number of products. But within the last few years, I’ve found texture products that I’ve used to most every extreme – from thoughtfully applying lighter amounts to specific areas to nothing shy of globbing it on with my largest knife and then working it instinctively on the canvas surface.

In this piece, I definitely took the globbing approach but then I scraped some areas out and even pressed objects into the wet material to add shapes and patterns. Because it’s hard to see detail in a photo, I’ve added a few close-up snap shots that will give you a better idea of the whole.
