I get in very fervent modes with painting. Something within my process will really strike or inspire me; which typically leads to me starting a number of paintings and… well… not finishing all of them. The ones that don’t make it to completion get set aside and wait for their next opportunity. With these ‘lost soles’ I sometimes scrap them / start over completely, and sometimes I look at one of them and see something that I can build upon.
I started, what turned out to be, A Quiet Street about eight months ago. I was going through a ‘stage’ playing with different approaches to texture. This piece has a heavy layer of flexible modeling paste (one of my texture mediums of choice) that I mixed direct to the paint, muting some of the colors more than others. In the series, I used everything from a rubber cooking spatula to multiple sharp objects to create different looks. This piece was created with two pallet knives. I completed twelve of the fourteen paintings that I had started , which for me is quite good. And here is lucky number thirteen.
