Until this painting, I hadn’t pulled out the oils in almost a year. I’ve focused solely on acrylics because the dry time is almost instantaneous and I needed to have enough work available to my galleries as pieces sold. I’ve been doing a lot of painting lately, so I’m finally far enough ahead that I could justify opening up the oil paints…. Boy have I missed them! I’m even in love with the smell of them. (If you’ve never experienced the smell, it’s pretty amazing – well maybe only to artists???)
I’ve learned a lot this past year in acrylics – most importantly, how I can make them work similarly to oils (by adding different mediums). Oils have a thick buttery feel and I paint straight out of the tube to maintain that texture. The dry time is wonderful when you’re working on a piece but a killer when you’re impatiently waiting to present your finished product. I work in water mixable oils, so they do dry faster than the traditional oil paints and also do require turpentine.
So here it is, In the Distance a 24”x36” OIL on gallery wrapped canvas.
