Here are the first two paintings in my commitment to complete 10 in five weeks. I have one more almost finished and another in process.
Red Scarf is the largest street scene painting that I’ve done to date, measuring 36″ x48″. There’s an interesting challenge in doing a piece that large. You of course want to fill the canvas but have to be careful not to over do it and make it too busy. So my goal was to just enlarge the scene, provide a little more detail than some of my smaller works but keep a single (major) focal point.
A Hazy Afternoon provided additional challenge. I worked with an entirely new pallet. Before starting this piece, I completely cleared off my paint table so that I wouldn’t automatically grab for my go-to colors. I not only went for new colors but ‘loosened’ my work up a great deal. This is much easier to do in oils due to drying time but fairly difficult in acrylics, even using a ‘slow-dry’ medium. I had to work quickly and focus on specific areas at a time.
