While demonstrating in a gallery this past Feb, I was surprised how many people (including gallery employees) were surprised that I consider myself a palette knife painter. My methods with the knife aren’t always traditional, so it’s not ‘obvious’ that I mainly use a knife. So I decided to create a few pieces with a more classic approach. (One above, more to come).
With acrylic paints, the pigment isn’t as thick and doesn’t automatically show knife (or brush) marks as it does with oils but there are a number of ways to achieve that look. In Scarlet Impressions, I painted in an even thicker fashion than I typically do and built up layers of color to create depth. Both pieces above were done with the same tools – just created in a different way.
